Economic Development

Our Mission:

The White Earth Nation's Economic Development Division is building a self-sustaining economy through business retention, startup support, and diversified revenue streams. By investing in youth entrepreneurs and partnering across tribal programs, we empower our nation while preserving our cultural and natural resources.

Economic Development

The White Earth Nation's Economic Development Division's strategic vision involves transitioning to a diversified, self-sustaining economy by retaining and fostering existing businesses and engage with business start-ups on the White Earth Reservation and supporting an off-reservation presence, aiming to reduce reliance on traditional external funding sources and focus on strengthening our economic revenue streams. Our strategy also concentrates on the next generation of entrepreneurs by working to establish a cultural hub and protecting our traditional footways and natural resources, linking economic growth to Ojibwe heritage to heal and empower our nation. Our team works across all White Earth divisions and programs to assist with collaboration of funding through our grant writing department and seeks to work with all our entities on energy management.

Our Mission

The White Earth Economic Development Office (WEEDO) works to support, retain and foster existing entrepreneurships on the White Earth Reservation, and to attract new businesses which enhance career opportunities for tribal citizens, enabling them to work on the reservation while preserving the integrity of their rich cultural heritage.

Loan Assistance

The White Earth Band of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe has long been committed to exploring ways to promote economic growth and prosperity of its people. In collaboration with the Midwest Minnesota Community Development Corporation (MMCDC) and White Earth Investment Initiative (WEII) through the State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI), the Tribe has created exciting opportunities for White Earth tribal members seeking financial support to launch or expand businesses.

A Key moment in this initiative came when the first SSBCI loan was granted to Marissa Annette, a White Earth member and co-owner of Morell’s Anishinaabe Trading Post in Bemidji. This loan helped in the purchase of this independent retail store, a well-known local business, this purchase marks the first time that Morell’s has Native owners. This business will continue to bring economic benefit and a sense of community pride.

If you would like to learn more about this opportunity at acquiring capital to help get a new business started or looking to supplement your current business, reach out to the White Earth Investment Initiative or click the link below and learn more about the SSBCI program.
