Ambulance

The mission of the White Earth Reservation Ambulance Service is to provide the highest level of pre-hospital care through rapid response, continuous training, compassion, and dedication to the people we serve.

The White Earth Reservation Ambulance was first organized in 1976. The service now has over 20 staff members consisting of both EMT's and Paramedics. We provide 24 hour emergency medical coverage to the citizens of the White Earth Reservation. We are a BLS (Basic Life Support) with a part time Advanced Life Support license when we have a paramedic on duty. Our ambulance serves approximately 5,500 people, with fluctuations during the tourist seasons. Our service covers approximately 1,300 square miles. We have our base stations in the village of White Earth and a substation in the village of Naytahwaush. We are dispatched through the 911 system. Depending on what area you are in the call will be dispatched to our ambulance by either Mahnomen County Sheriff's Department or White Earth Dispatch. White Earth Reservation Ambulance Service is a state licensed Emergency Medical Training Institute. Emergency Medical Responder and Emergency Medical Technician training is available to those who may be interested. With the White Earth Health Department, we also provide training in CPR, First Aid, Narcan administration, and Stop the Bleed.

What To Do In An Emergency

Heart Attack
Signs and Symptoms:
Clutching chest, grey color, sweating, chest pain, pressure, squeezing, nausea, pain or numbness in neck radiating down left arm and shortness of breath.

Actions:
Call 911. Keep the person calm and have them sit or lay down. Give the dispatcher any information that you have on the persons medical history. Stay on the line with dispatch for any instructions, if needed put your phone on speaker. If the person becomes unconscious, move them onto a hard surface on their back. Look, listen and feel for adequate breathing and any movement. If you have been trained in CPR start with chest compressions, then rescue breathing. Dispatch may be able to give you instructions over the phone on how to provide CPR if you have not been trained. Keep CPR going until help arrives from either law enforcement or EMS personnel.

Choking
Signs and Symptoms: Both hands grasping at neck, unable to make sound, red face and blue lips.

Actions:
Ask the person "Are you choking?" If they shake thier head yes, do the abdominal thrust maneuver. Repeat until the object comes out or they collapse. Have someone or yourself call 911 immediately . If they collapse, open the person's mouth and look for the object and try to take it out. Try to give 2 breaths, if you can't get breaths in, do 30 chest compressions and recheck to see if you are able to see and remove the object blocking the airway. Try to give 2 breaths and continue with chest compressions until the airway is cleared or help arrives.
