Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO)

Our Mission

It is the mission of the White Earth tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) to identify and protect White Earth historic and cultural resources so that history and traditions are preserved for White Earth people for generations to come.

The White Earth THPO works closely with local governments, federal agencies, and tribal nations. THPO also works closely with departments within the RBC and seeks guidance from White Earth Nation members. Collaboration with these tribal and federal entities assists THPO operations in making informed decisions regarding White Earth's historic and cultural resources.

Consultation

The Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO) is a designated Tribal representative for historic and cultural preservation. The THPO assumes oversight of the National Historic Preservation Act's Section 106 process from the state, granting authority and consultation on Federal 'undertakings' on tribal lands, historic tribal territories, and areas of historic cultural connection. The THPO is recognized as the official Tribal representative regarding section 106 under multiple Federal laws, including:

  • National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA)
  • American Indian Religious Freedom Act (AIRFA)
  • Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA)
  • National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)

Repatriation

Through inventory notifications from art institutions, universities and federally funded organizations the THPO manages the repatriation of ancestors, sacred items, and items of cultural patrimony affiliated with White Earth. The THPO fosters engagement with cultural leaders, repatriation representatives and other Anishinaabe THPOs, to make informed and respectful decisions in the repatriation process.

Archives

The Tribal Archives is dedicated to the long-term preservation and stewardship of White Earth's historical and cultural heritage ,which includes archival documents and cultural items. Our responsibilities include locating, organizing, caring for, and selectively digitizing materials that document White Earth's past and present. As the Archives continue to grow, we are working to expand access and strengthen connections between these materials and the community.

Organizational Memberships

The White Earth THPO team strives to improve in all areas of historical and cultural preservation. To assist in this effort, White Earth THPO is a member of the following national organizations:
